Dieter Rams: 10 Timeless Commandments for Good Design
Who is Dieter Rams, first of all? Dieter Rams is a German industrial designer who was responsible for the design of Braun’s consumer products for many years. About 50 years ago, in his quest to answer the question “Is my design a good design?”, he developed the 10 principles of good design, sometimes also known as 10 commandments. It’s amazing to see how valid these principles are today, so much that we might feel than even more than back then, when Rams actually wrote them!
According to Dieter Rams, good design:
  1. Is innovative
  2. Makes a product useful
  3. Is aesthetic
  4. Makes a product understandable
  5. Is unobtrusive
  6. Is honest
  7. Is long-lasting
  8. Is thorough down to the last detail
  9. Is environmentally friendly
  10. Involves as little design as possible

“Thinking about design is hard, but not thinking about it can be disastrous.”

Thinking about design is probably one of the toughest challenges that a designer could face in his projects and perhaps even in his career. Despite these, we, designers, do our best to overcome this and not get swayed by analysis paralysis or in other words, get stuck in thinking. The worst part is not getting stuck but instead, it is not thinking about design that is truly horrific.  I, as a designer, do my best to not get stuck in paralysis analysis nor in not thinking of any design whatsoever.
