Dieter Rams: 10 Timeless
Commandments for Good Design
Who is
Dieter Rams, first of all? Dieter Rams is a German industrial designer who was
responsible for the design of Braun’s consumer products for many years. About
50 years ago, in his quest to answer the question “Is my design a good
design?”, he developed the 10 principles of good design, sometimes also known as 10
commandments. It’s amazing to see how valid these principles are today, so much
that we might feel than even more than back then, when Rams actually wrote
them!
According
to Dieter Rams, good design:
- Is innovative
- Makes a product useful
- Is aesthetic
- Makes a product understandable
- Is unobtrusive
- Is honest
- Is long-lasting
- Is thorough down to the last detail
- Is environmentally friendly
- Involves as little design as possible
